"Hi Ali. How was your weekend?" asked Larry as he waited for his coffee at the machine in the break room at their office. "Oh, hi Larry. It was great. We took the kids to the Pineries Conservation Area for a winter picnic. We took some sunflower seeds so the kids could feed the chick-a-dees right out of their hands." "Really?" asked Larry. "Wild birds will eat right out of their hands?" "Uh-huh," said Ali. "They sit on your fingers and eat right out of your hands. The kids love it.And then we went to look for the tundra swans," said Ali. "Oh, I forgot all about the swan migration," said Larry. "Yes," Ali continued. "I'd forgotten about it too but my youngest daughter, Libby made me think about it. She heard some noisy honking one night last week and saw big white birds with long necks flying overhead in a V formation. She came running to find me because she thought they were ghost birds!" Larry smiled, "Your Libby has quite an imagination." "Yes, she does," laughed Ali. "We went out the front door and watched them. And they did look a little ghostly against the night sky. Libby wasn't convinced that they weren't ghosts so we decided to go and see them the next day." "And does she believe they aren't ghosts now?"asked Larry. "You bet," laughed Ali. "There were hundreds of them. It was quite a sight to see." Every spring flocks of tundra swans begin their 4,500 kilometer migration from Maryland and North Carolina in the US to the Arctic in Canada's far north. They stop for food and rest in the lakes and cornfields of southwestern Ontario. Migrating refers to the yearly movement of birds; south for winter and north for summer. And when people leave their home countries they emigrate. And when they arrive in their new country, they are called immigrants. Ali and his family immigrated to Canada five years ago and they enjoy exploring on the weekends. Ali told Larry about the small birds eating from his children's hands. That makes me think of an expression we use in English. If you say that you have someone eating out of the palm of your hand, it means that they are happy to do whatever you want them to |
